How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost?
A home EV charger installation can cost anywhere from $750 to more than $3,000. In the US, the average price is $1,300, but yours may cost more if your home’s setup is more complicated than average. The main factors that impact your price are your electrical panel’s capacity and the distance between your panel and your charger location.
What are the different types of EV chargers? Which one should I get?
There are three main types of EV chargers:
Level 1 (120V): Uses a standard household outlet, best for overnight charging but slow (3-5 miles per hour).
Level 2 (240V): Faster charging (15-50 miles per hour), ideal for home and business installations.
DC Fast Chargers: Found at public stations, can charge up to 80% in 20-45 minutes but require specialized infrastructure.
A level 2 charger typically offers homeowners the best balance of cost and speed. It requires installation by a licensed and qualified electrician but can charge your electric vehicle up to 15x faster than a type 1 charger and cost you less in electricity. In some cases you may even have access to reduced electricty rates for EV charging.
Is my electrical panel sufficient for an EV charger installation?
It depends on your panel’s capacity. Most Level 2 chargers require a 240V circuit and 30-50 amps. If your panel is 100 amps (common among old panels), an upgrade may be needed to handle the extra load safely. CPN Electric can assess your panel and recommend any necessary upgrades to ensure a safe and efficient installation.
